Retired couple booked 51 back-to-back cruises because it’s cheaper than living in retirement home

Retirement often signifies a time of relaxation and newfound freedom from the daily grind, offering opportunities to explore hobbies and savor life’s pleasures. For an Australian couple, Marty and Jess Ansen, retirement took an unconventional turn as they embarked on an extraordinary journey – 51 consecutive cruises. Beyond the allure of adventure, they discovered that this unique lifestyle was not only fulfilling but also more cost-effective than traditional retirement homes.

The Ansen’s remarkable voyage began in June 2022 when they set sail on the Coral Princess, a ship renowned for its indulgent amenities. Originally planned as a short getaway, their cruise evolved into a 500-day odyssey. Marty expressed how it transpired: “Whatever comes, book it.” Consequently, they booked 51 back-to-back cruises, making them the longest-staying passengers on the ship.

Onboard the Coral Princess, the Ansen’s became legendary passengers, forging deep connections with the ship’s staff. Their cruise offers all-inclusive meals and daily cabin housekeeping, resembling a second family.

Surprisingly, they found their cruising lifestyle to be more economically viable than residing in a retirement home, challenging conventional retirement planning.

Maintaining a daily routine of adventure, they kickstart each day with an hour of table tennis, combining fitness with fun. Their journey of over 450 consecutive days at sea reflects their unwavering commitment to living life to the fullest in retirement.

Marty and Jess Ansen’s story is a testament to the idea that retirement can be a time to chase dreams relentlessly. In their case, those dreams span the endless horizons of the open sea.
