Scientists warn that a major earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) off the U.S. West Coast could trigger a catastrophic tsunami. There’s a 37% chance of such an event occurring by 2100. The CSZ, where the Juan de Fuca Plate slips beneath the North American Plate, runs from northern Vancouver Island to northern California. A magnitude 8.0–9.0 quake could drop the coastline by eight feet, unleashing a 100-foot tsunami that could kill over 13,000 people, according to FEMA. Rising sea levels, expected to increase by up to two feet by 2100, would worsen the disaster’s impact.
