Do You Need to Wash Eggs Before Using Them?

Should You Wash Your Eggs Before Cooking?

Eggs are a kitchen essential, but one question often sparks debate: should they be washed before use? The answer might surprise you—it’s not as straightforward as it seems.

Why Some People Wash Eggs

Many wash eggs out of habit or to make sure they’re clean. However, eggs come with a natural protective layer called the cuticle or bloom. Think of it as a built-in shield against bacteria.

The Egg’s Natural Protection

The cuticle is a thin coating that seals the tiny pores in the eggshell. It keeps bacteria out and prevents moisture from escaping. Washing eggs removes this layer, making the egg more vulnerable to contamination.

What About Salmonella?

Salmonella is often the main concern when handling eggs. Luckily, unwashed eggs with their cuticle intact carry very little risk. The natural coating acts as a barrier to bacteria.

If you’re still cautious, cooking eggs thoroughly—like boiling—adds extra safety. High heat kills surface bacteria, and the eggshell’s inner membrane keeps water from getting inside.

To Wash or Not to Wash

In the end, whether to wash eggs is a personal choice, depending on your comfort level and the source of the eggs. Eggs from a reputable supplier can safely be used without washing if proper handling practices are followed.

Appreciate the Egg

Washing or not, eggs deserve respect. Their natural coating protects them, and their versatility makes them a kitchen staple. Next time you make an omelet or a batch of deviled eggs, remember the humble egg and its remarkable cuticle.
