Obama slams Trump’s tariff plan with blunt eight-word comment

President Donald Trump and his administration have made decisions that sparked controversy not only in political circles but also among the general public.

Among the rest, many of the executive orders Trump signed since returning to the White House have been challenged by certain organizations that claim they contradict the laws.

Most recently, on what he dubbed a “Liberation Day,” Trump unveiled a broad new tariff plan.

As reported by VTthe president’s new policy imposes a universal 10% tariff on all imports, featuring major hikes for 60 countries labeled as “worst offenders.”

In the speech he delivered from the White House Rose Garden, Trump proudly stated: “We’ve been waiting for a long time.

“April 2, 2025, will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America’s destiny was reclaimed, and the day that we began to ‘Make America Wealthy Again.’”

Further, he added: “For decades our country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered by nations, near and far, from both friend and foe alike.”

Among those who slammed Trump for the tariff plan was former President Barack Obama.

“I have deep differences of opinion with my most immediate successor — who’s now president once again,” Obama said at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York on Thursday.

“I don’t think what we just witnessed in terms of economic policy and tariffs is going to be good for America,” he added.

“When I watch some of what’s going on now, it does not — look, I don’t think what we just witnessed in terms of economic policy and tariffs is going to be good for America, but that’s a specific policy.

“I’m more deeply concerned with a federal government that threatens universities if they don’t give up students who are exercising their right to free speech,” the father-of-two continued.

“I am more troubled by the idea that a White House can say to law firms, ‘If you represent parties that we don’t like, we’re going to pull all our business or bar you from representing people effectively.’”

He wrapped his speech up with an eight-word remark that spoke volumes: “Imagine if I had done any of this?”

Trump believes that imposing tariffs would make Americans buy more domestic goods.

As expected, some of the countries affected announced tariffs on the U.S.

The tariffs will remain in effect until the president “determines the ‘threat posed by the trade deficit and underlying nonreciprocal treatment is satisfied, resolved, or mitigated,” the White House states.
