House Speaker Mike Johnson is backing Donald Trump’s proposal to hold a presidential-style Republican National Convention ahead of the 2026 midterms. Trump promoted the plan on Truth Social, praising Republican fundraising and momentum while urging the party to “STAY TUNED.” Johnson echoed support on X, calling it a “great rallying point” before the midterms.
The push comes as Republicans gain ground in voter registrations. A New York Times analysis found the GOP added 2.4 million voters since 2020, while Democrats lost about 2.1 million — a 4.5 million swing. The trend spans all 30 states that track party affiliation, with especially sharp shifts in battlegrounds like Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada, fueled by Trump’s growing appeal among working-class voters, Latinos, and young men.
