The United States is considering expanding the amount of personal data collected from foreign visitors through the ESTA system under the Visa Waiver Program. The proposal would require applicants to disclose years of social media activity, email addresses, contact details, and potentially expanded biometric data in the future. U.S. officials say the move would strengthen early security screening, while critics warn it threatens privacy, free expression, and could deter tourism. The plan is currently open for public comment and, if approved, would not take effect before 2026.
