USAID, founded under JFK to provide foreign aid, was absorbed by the State Department after President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, labeled it a “viper’s nest” of radicals. The shutdown sparked bipartisan criticism and concern for future humanitarian efforts.
